Transcranial Doppler studies can be done either with and without imaging. These are a non-invasive tests used to evaluate the circle of Willis and the vertebrobasilar arteries using various techniques and acoustic windows. This presentation will provide basic skills needed for those with no prior experience to better understand examination procedures, equipment, acoustic windows, vessel identification, Doppler characteristics, and diagnostic criteria for these exams. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit)
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
Explain the normal intracerebral arterial branches and collateral pathways
Describe typical depths and velocities for normal arteries
Describe acoustic windows, equipment and technique for a complete exam
Explain the differences between imaging and non-imaging exams
About Our Speaker
Pamela Brower, BHSc, RVT, RVS, earned a Bachelor in Health Science from Nova Southeastern University. She recently retired as the Department Chair of a CAAHEP-accredited sonography program in East Texas for 20 years. While there, Pam was awarded the 2008 Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence. Currently, she is a consultant for Inside-Echo, assisting Vascular Labs with IAC accreditation. She enjoys using her passion for teaching and serving with medical teams during missions to Haiti, the French Congo, Nepal, and with Mercy Ships. She is also an item writer for the CCI/RVS. Born in Boston but living in Texas, her Bostonian roots run deep for the Red Sox and Patriots.
