We are pleased to present Jennifer L. Dukoff, AAS, BA, RDMS Sonographer, Author and Advocate for the LGBTQ+ Community for a discussion on providing respectful, compassionate care to patients
across the spectrum of sexualities and gender.
Course Description
This 2-hour virtual workshop is designed to help provide the medical professional with the necessary information to be more inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as give an understanding of the challenges this community faces when accessing healthcare providers. The course will address everything from how to market your healthcare facility as a welcoming setting, creating appropriate patient paperwork, staff sensitivity training, and conducting exams with acute awareness of individual patient comfort levels, to caring for the patient in transition and performing imaging exams. (Approved for 2 SDMS CME credits)
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
Have an understanding of definitions the LGBTQ+ community uses for gender/orientation/pronouns
Comprehend and appreciate the challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces in accessing healthcare that is free from discrimination
Recognize and understand the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community when having to choose a provider; assuring it is a safe and welcoming place for their care, including everyone they will interact with from the reception staff to clinical providers
Understand the challenges the healthcare provider may face in patient identifiers, as well as different imaging limitations/challenges that may be encountered due to patients that may be in transition
Learn how to reframe one’s thinking/intake plans to be more inclusive
Come away with an action plan/resources to make one’s healthcare institution/department/office feel welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community
About Our Speaker
Jennifer L. Dukoff, AAS, BA, RDMS has been a Sonographer for 21 years, registered in Abdomen and OB/GYN. For the past 20 of those years, she has worked exclusively in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialty. Directly after graduating from NYU’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, Ms. Dukoff initially worked at Northwell Manhasset (NSUH) for 10 years, Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip as a Sonographer in the MFM Department for 11 years, and currently works for Square Care Medical Group in their MFM Department. She taught at Hunter Business School’s DMS Program for 3 years, teaching OB/GYN and Critical Thinking. Jennifer has also clinically supervised students from multiple ultrasound programs, in addition to lecturing Residents once a month on topics related to OB/GYN Ultrasound.
Jennifer is a published author of a children’s book called Meeting My Brother, the first of its kind, which tells the story of 2 donor-conceived siblings meeting and becoming family. She has been on the Board for the Bay Shore Special Education PTA for the past 7 years. Jennifer is a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as special education. Jennifer is also an American Heart Association CPR Instructor.
This activity has been approved for 2.0 SDMS CME credits. The CME participant roster will be reported by Ultrasound Solutions Corp. to the SDMS CME Tracker System.
