Course Description
One of the life-threatening complications that patients with COVID-19 face is the development of blood clots in both arteries and veins. Vascular Sonography is a crucial part of the diagnostic process that can make a difference in survival for these hypercoagulable patients. This virtual conference, given by Dr. Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos who leads Stony Brook Medicine’s Vascular and ICU COVID-19 Team, will focus on the significance of sonography for patients with coronavirus related thrombosis. In addition, Dr. Tassiopoulos will highlight the aggressive anticoagulation protocol based on D-dimer levels developed by his team and now implemented throughout the Stony Brook Medicine hospital system. This event has been approved for 1 SDMS CME credit.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence of arterial and venous thrombosis in patient with COVID-19 infection
- Analyze the use of duplex ultrasound in the diagnosis of arterial and venous thrombosis
- Describe strategies for preventing thrombotic complications in these patients
About Our Speaker
Apostolos Tassiopoulos, MD holds multiple positions within the Stony Brook University medical system including Chief of the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Division, Director of the Vascular Center, Director of Endovascular Surgery at Southampton Hospital, Co-Director of the Aortic Center, Director of the Surgical Skills Center, as well as Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair for Quality and Outcome at Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine. He graduated from Aristotle University Medical School and completed his residency in Surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical School, followed by a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Loyola University. With over 31 years of experience, he has been published extensively and lectured both nationally and internationally on the diagnosis and management of vascular pathologies. Dr. Tassiopoulos is currently involved with heading the Vascular and ICU COVID-19 Teams at Stony Brook University Hospital and the development of their innovative anticoagulation clinical trial protocol for both the inpatient and post-discharge periods.
