Cautionary Tales of Malpractice – How to Best Protect Yourself

ULTRASOUND SOLUTIONS CORP. proudly welcomes Kerry E. Weinberg, PhD, MA, MPA, RT(R), RDMS, RDCS, FSDMS, Director of Northwell Health’s Sonography Program, for an informative “mustsee” session on sonographic medical malpractice. 

Course Description:

Do you fully understand the liabilities of malpractice as it applies to ultrasonic imaging? This presentation will introduce medical malpractice with a focus on legally hazardous sonographic situations. It will include examples of ultrasound negligence, the importance of Standard of Care, as well as providing malpractice case scenarios to test your knowledge. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit, provided one is present for the entire event)

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Define terminology used in malpractice cases.
  • Explain the importance of Standard of Care.
  • Explain legally hazardous situations.
  • List the most typical examples of negligence in the field of ultrasound.

About Our Speaker:   

KweinbergKerry E. Weinberg, PhD, MA, MPA, RT(R), RDMS, RDCS, FSDMS is presently the Director of the Sonography Program at the Northwell Health Center for Learning and Innovation. Prior to this position, she was Associate Professor and Director of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Long Island University, as well as Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at New York University. In addition to her PhD from Fielding Graduate University, she has two Master’s degrees; an MA from Fielding Graduate University and a Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) from New York University. 

Dr. Weinberg has clinical experience working in urban and suburban hospital settings and private physician offices. In addition, she has taught internationally in Australia, Guyana, and Bangladesh. She currently serves as Vice-President of the International Foundation for Sonography Education and Research (IFSER) and continues working to educate healthcare professionals in low-resource countries. 

Giving back to her professional community has always been important to Dr. Weinberg. She has held leadership positions in multiple national organizations – serving on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS); being SDMS’s current Commissioner to CAAHEP; Past Chair of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS); Past Vice-President and Secretary of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP); active CAAHEP Site Visitor. Presently, Kerry is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS) and continues to serve as CAAHEP’s liaison to the Cytotechnology Program Review Committee.  

Other roles Dr. Weinberg has served in include being on the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Board of Directors, Chair of the Education Development Task Force (EDTF) for the OB/GYN credential, Chair of the Hearing Compliance Panel, member of the Compliance Review Panel, and presently, an Item Reviewer for the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.  

This activity has been approved for 1.0 SDMS CME credit.

The CME participant roster will be reported by Ultrasound Solutions Corp. to the SDMS CME Tracker System.

Important update from the SDMS:

SDMS no longer allows its CME providers to issue Partial Credit for attendance. If you join late or leave early, the SDMS will no longer permit us to award partial pro-rated credit.

Therefore, from now on, in order to receive CME credit, you must be in attendance for the ENTIRE event via your own unique Zoom link that Zoom emailed to you when you registered. Then, and only then, will USC be able to award you any credit. So, please be prompt and attentive to the time schedule.
