Fetal Genitourinary Tract: A Review of Normal Anatomy & Anomalies

Course Description:

Have you mastered evaluating the Fetal Genitourinary Tract? This course will review normal fetal genitourinary anatomy (kidneys, urinary bladder, adrenal glands, external genitalia) and associated anatomic anomalies that can be diagnosed prenatally on sonographic examination. A classification method and summary of key points that permit the recognition and differentiation of genitourinary anomalies will be highlighted. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit, provided one is present for the entire event)

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize fetal genitourinary anatomy and describe sonographic features associated with normal anatomic structures.
  • Describe a classification system that permits recognition and differentiation of the most common fetal anatomic genitourinary anomalies.
  • Identify and distinguish frequently seen abnormalities affecting the fetal kidneys, adrenal glands, and urinary bladder.

About Our Speaker:

Jim Baun, MEd, RDMS, RVT, FSDMS, is a pioneering clinical, research, and academic Sonographer who has been practicing since the early days of the profession. With over forty years’ experience in the field, his areas of expertise have come to include Vascular and OB/GYN Sonography, Hemodynamics, Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation, as well as emerging technologies.  

Jim is widely published in medical literature and has authored several academic textbooks, along with over twenty peer-reviewed journal articles.  He has served on the faculty and advisory councils for several university and college-based sonography programs and has developed didactic curricula for private educational organizations throughout the United States and abroad. In recognition of his contributions to the profession, Jim was elevated to Fellow status in the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 1997, was the recipient of the Joan Baker Pioneer Award in 2016, and delivered the prestigious McLaughlin Memorial Lecture at the SDMS Annual Conference in 2019.

After living and working for 35 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim retired to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio in 2019 but remains active as a clinical, education, and research consultant for ultrasound device manufacturers and sonography educational programs.

This activity is an approved SDMS CME activity – approved for 1.0 SDMS CME credit.

SDMS CME Tracker System.

Important update from the SDMS:

SDMS no longer allows its CME providers to issue Partial Credit for attendance. If you join late or leave early, the SDMS will no longer permit us to award partial pro-rated credit.

Therefore, from now on, in order to receive CME credit, you must be in attendance for the ENTIRE event via your own unique Zoom link that Zoom emailed to you when you registered. Then, and only then, will USC be able to award you any credit. So, please be prompt and attentive to the time schedule.
