Course Description
Injury prevention in sonography involves a number of factors, including the right equipment and manageable patient schedules. But, above all, making changes in our work postures is one of the most important factors and the one over which we have complete control. So, why are we resistant to change? This question and suggestions for implementing simple and effective changes will be explored in this presentation. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit)
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
Identify causes for occupational injuries in sonography
Discuss the changes in our workstation equipment over the years
Investigate why we are resistant to making changes in our equipment and our work postures
Identify how we can approach changes in our work environment and our own work behaviors
About Our Speaker
Carolyn Coffin, MPH, RDMS, RDCS, RVT has worked in the field of ultrasound since 1987. She has been the Program Coordinator for diagnostic medical sonography programs, as well as a Clinical Sonographer. Carolyn has performed exams in and taught a number of ultrasound specialty areas. Her professional activities include service on boards of directors and various committees for an ultrasound professional organization, the editorial board of a professional journal, and as a site visitor for an educational program accreditation organization. She retired from the Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound at Seattle University in 2018 and continues as both the CEO and an Ergonomics Consultant at Sound Ergonomics.
Her interest in occupational injuries among sonographers developed through her work with Joan Baker and was the focus of her research while working on a Master’s Degree in Public Health.
Carolyn has lectured on occupational injury at local and national professional society meetings, has provided hands-on tutorials, has created educational videos for Sonographers, and has developed other ergonomic products for allied health.
This activity has been approved for 1.0 SDMS CME credit. The CME participant roster will be reported by Ultrasound Solutions Corp. to the SDMS CME Tracker System.
