Lower Extremity Venous Insufficiency – Duplex Ultrasound to the Rescue!

Course Description:

Evaluation of the lower extremities is one of the most frequently requested sonographic studies during this global pandemic. To provide the best diagnostic exams, Sonographers need to be well-versed in the specifics of conditions that affect the lower extremities, such as venous insufficiency. During this event, we will analyze the importance of the patient’s clinical presentation and how it will help determine the direction of the sonographic exam. We will also review general venous anatomy and venous hemodynamics, and finally, learn the fundamentals of lower extremity venous duplex for venous insufficiency. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit)

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:

• State the venous anatomy of the lower extremity
• Identify hemodynamic changes that occur with lower extremity venous insufficiency
• Discuss a comprehensive ultrasound protocol for lower extremity venous insufficiency testing

About Our Speaker: 

Donna Kelly, RVT, RPhS, RDMS, has worked in the field of ultrasound for the last 25 years. Twenty of those years have been dedicated solely to Vascular Ultrasound. She spent the majority of her career working at Massachusetts General Vein Care (previously Vein Solutions), the last five of which she was Technical Director. She is now the Technical Director at Middlesex Surgical Associates, as well as a Technologist for the Massachusetts General Hospital Vascular Lab. Donna has a passion for understanding and evaluating venous disease, including the lower extremities and the pelvis. She is currently part of the Leadership Team, and had previously been on the Ultrasound Committee, for the American Vein and Lymphatic Society. She enjoyed co-chairing the Ultrasound Program for the 2020 and 2021 AVLS Annual Congress. Presently, Donna is also the Co-Chair of the Exam Writing Committee for Cardiovascular Credentialing International’s (CCI) Registered Phlebology Sonographers exam. She has lectured locally in her hometown of Boston, MA, as well as at national meetings, such as the Society for Vascular Ultrasound and AVLS.

In addition, Donna has been the lead author of three publications and the contributing author in a fourth. Donna has extensive experience with the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission’s (IAC) Vein Center accreditation process and has had great success in guiding multiple centers through their applications.
